Historic Places

Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Museum, 435-628-7274

Completed in 1938, this building was financed by Mrs. Hortense McQuarrie for the express purpose of housing pioneer relics. Next to the pioneer courthouse and the chamber of commerce, the museum is staffed by volunteers and is usually open Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Jacob Hamblin Home & Museum, 435-673-2161
Santa Clara Drive, Santa Clara, UT
Jacob Hamblin's Home & Museum is located west of Santa Clara on Hwy 91. Jacob Hamblin, one of the earliest settlers of Santa Clara, constructed this home in 1862 with local red sandstone and ponderosa lumber from Pine Valley. It is decorated with many original artifacts. Open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (winter) and to 7:00 pm (summer).
Pine Valley Chapel
Forest Road and 35 East, Pine Valley, UT
The chapel was built in 1868 by Ebenezer Bryce, a shipbuilder. The interior looks like a over-turned ship. Visitors can climb the winding staircase to the attic to see the open beams where there is an artifacts room. You will see it when you enter Pine Valley on Highway 18. Located 30 miles north of St George. It is the oldest LDS chapel still in use and is open to the public every day from Memorial Day to Labor Day 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. On Sundays there are church meetings held at the chapel from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.
Ghost Towns
The Silver Reef Museum (435-879-2254)

It also houses the Jerry Anderson Studio & Gallery. Silver Reef is one of the most popular ghost towns in the area. The town had a booming economy in in 1870's. The town produced $9 million in silver from 1877 to 1903. This unique town had homes, churches, a variety of specialty shops, a brothel and even a Chinatown.
Grafton
You will find the town of Grafton between Springdale and La Verkin on Highway 9 as you are driving toward Zion National Park. Grafton is reached by crossing the Virgin River over the old truss bridge in Rockville.
Portions of the movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" were filmed in Grafton in 1969. Visitors can see the remains of pioneer homes, the church and the cemetery. Between 1860 and 1868, there were only about 30 families living there. The great flood of 1861 forced the settlement to move to high ground the first year and the Virgin river rose every year which increased destruction. Indian attacks were frequent. Most of the residents left by 1868.
Harrisburg
Located just off I-15 12 miles north of the City of St. George.
Harrisburg was a pioneer town founded in 1859 by Moses Harris and sons. When the 1862 floods hit the town they abandoned the original site and settled on the other side of what is now Interstate 15. Many of the houses of Harrisburg are still seen in the valley.
Hiking
People come from all over the country and foreign countries just to hike and see the breathtaking views of our area. There are trails for every age level and experience. You may obtain maps of these trails at the Bureau of Land Management Information Center located at 345 E Riverside Drive in St. George, or call them at 435- 688-3246.

The gallery features the permanent "Legacy Collection" as well as continually changing exhibits by local artists in an elegant, new building with pioneer ambiance.

Conveniently located just off Exit 6 & I-15, the museum brings the world to you. Experience first hand wildlife in a natural habitat setting from the mountains to the plains of the world. Don't miss the world bug collection and art gallery. Bring your cameras.
Cost $2.50 for children and $5.50 for adults with a $1 discount for seniors. Group tours are available on request. Open Mondays from 12:00 to 9:00 pm and Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Construction of this historic Mormon monument took 13 years. The fact that it was completed at the same time, the temple, courthouse and the settler's homes were under construction is indeed a tribute to the industry of the early settlers. The stone for the three-foot basement walls was hand-quarried from the foothills near the city. The twin spiral staircases were hand carved, complete with balustrades and railing. The clock was made in London and shipped to St. George.
Free music recitals are offered every day Monday through Saturday at 12:15 pm. Many other special events are held there throughout the year. Call for a complete list of events.

Begin your tour at the Old Pioneer Courthouse at 100 East & St. George Boulevard (Chamber of Commerce Visitor's Center). From there, spend an enjoyable hour or two strolling the street of early-day St. George, where many pre-turn of-the-century public buildings and private homes still stand as reminders of a by-gone era. You may pick up a printed map and descriptions of each building at the Chamber Visitor's Center as you begin your tour.

If you are fortunate enough to be in the area between Memorial Day and Labor Day don't miss the opportunity to acquaint yourself with the history and culture of the area. Historic figures come alive at six sites and describe living in Dixie at the turn of the century. Entertaining and educational for the whole family. Tuesday-Saturday at 9:00 am and 10:30 am. Tickets are $2.00 for adults and children under 12 are free. Tours begin at the St. George Art Museum. Special tours can be arranged year round with advanced scheduling.

Southern Utah now offers the spectacular experience of skydiving, along with an aerial panoramic view of the canyons of Zion National Park through Skydive Zion. Tandem skydiving and advanced training is available.

Walking / Biking / Skating Paths & Parks
There are nearly 30 miles of scenic walking and biking paths throughout the St. George area. They connect neighborhood parks, riparian corridors, picturesque desertscapes and the town center. The City of St. George alone offers 22 parks for your enjoyment. A major goal of the master plan is to provide a neighborhood park within one-half mile of every home.
Washington County takes pride in their 26 excellent city parks with playgrounds, ball fields and courts, picnic facilities, fishing pools, all designed for family fun. For reservations for the St George Parks, call 435-634-5869.

Zion Canyon Giant Screen I-Max Theatre, 435-772-2400
Springdale, UT
Start your Zion Canyon experience with "Treasure of the God" an impressive film, stretching across time and season, exploring the legends of Zion and the Southwest. The film is shown daily on a six-story screen. The theatre complex includes a Paiute Indian exhibit, gift shops, bookstore, deli and picnic areas and is open year round, seven days a week.
Johnson's Farm Dinosaur Tracks, 435-674-5757

Even though there are hundreds of dinosaur tracks in the area, the largest and most accessible are at the Johnson Farm. Since they were discovered in 2000, visitors have come from every state and 46 countries to see this impressive find. You can also view dinosaur tracks at Warner Valley .Go to the Chamber of Commerce offices for directions to these dinosaur tracks. Usually open Monday thru Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
